Rachel Carson Intermediate School

The Rachel Carson Intermediate School, Q237

I.S. 237 strives to meet the diverse needs of all members of our school community. Classes are organized into grade level Houses or teams, affording youngsters the attention and comfort of a small learning environment. We offer a strong academic program which includes Special Progress classes on each grade level. Eighth grade SP students take Regents exams in Integrated Algebra, Earth Science and Living Environment, as well as the Spanish Proficiency exam and receive high school Regents credits accordingly. We boast a nearly 100% passing rate on all Regents exams. Many of our students go on to attend specialized high schools including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech. Our English Language Learners (ELLs) receive extensive supports services both during the school day and in after-school programs. Our Special Education Department provides a full range of academic and support services for all special needs youngsters. In addition to our emphasis on academics, we believe that arts instruction is a vital component of education. Every student at I.S. 237 receives instruction in the arts through our Talent Department classes in visual art, band, strings and chorus; partnerships with arts organizations such as Roundabout Theatre; and, after-school programs and clubs including photography, dance, film studies and guitar. Over the years, our pupils have received multiple writing and arts awards.  We also integrate technology into all aspects of our school program and have a fully equipped computer lab, multiple laptops and SMART Boards in most classrooms. The after-school OST Program runs Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 5:00 and from 2:30 to 5:30 PM on Friday. It also runs during most holidays. On Monday and Wednesday evenings, I.S. 237 hosts the Rachel Carson Community Center which features recreational activities and Family Literacy and computer classes for students and adults.
